Hello,

Is it ok to use the Passport Application Wizard to generate the pdf file containing the application even before becoming a citizen?
I'll be come a citizen next week, but would like to go ahead and have the documentation for the passport prepared so I can apply right after the oath ceremony.

I am not 100% sure if that is fine as I am sure it will store the date it was filled online somewhere.
Another option you have is, they have a fillable pdf on their site. Download it, complete it and get the printout.

Actually, the Passport Application Wizard does not file a passport application. It is designed to assist you complete the passport form correctly by filling out the application form online (it even chooses the correct form for you).

It worked out for me. I had completed the application one week prior to naturalizing and applied the day after oath for the passport. You should be fine - nothing illegal about filling out a form and not turning it in until you are eligible for the benefits.

FYI: my best friend applied for her first U.S passport two months ago just after she naturalised. she had in advance filled out, signed, and dated the application. in error, she wrote the date a few days before the day she took oath. the lady at the post office(also from India :) ) asked her to change the date on the application to the same day as oath day(or later)... I guess it makes no logic sense if you signed&dated passport application earlier than the day you receive your naturalisation certificate!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:eek::eek:

ummm.... You're not supposed to sign the application until you are in front of the receiving agent. So your friend was wrong just for signing and dating the application - regardless of the date she put on it.

But obviously - you wouldn't pre-date the application because you aren't a citizen until you take the oath.
