It depends on your situation what box you need to check. It's hard to say not knowing any details of your case. You seem to think you need to check the first box. Why? What makes you eligible to apply? Has a relative filed an immigrant petition for you?

My advice is to read over the form instructions VERY CAREFULLY. Pay particular attention to what Initial Evidence you need to file, especially the evidence of eligibility, since it is customized based on why you are filing for AOS.
