Parent's Case: Advantage of applying for EAD?

I am just getting ready to apply for my mother's greencard. I am noticing that several people are filing for the EAD also.
There is no intention for my mother to work. Is there any advantage in applying for the EAD.

Yes, you get EAD several months in advance to your GC. With EAD you can apply for Social Security Number and get it. With SSN, you can claim your parents as dependent on your tax, if you want. With EAD and SSN they can start showing income $3600/yr minimum , i guess, to qualify for 4 points/year for their Social security benefits later on.
They get good looking EAD card with their photos that makes them and you feel good.

Can they live without EAD , sure, they can , GC will be there within 4 months (from EAD) any way.

The GC won't arrive that soon, given that the OP has not filed the application yet. 6-12 months is a more realistic time frame.

As far as the EAD is concerned, the EAD is another government ID that is useful even if the individual does not want to work. It can be used when opening a bank account (some banks require 2 IDs so the passport alone is insufficient), and may be required to obtain a driver's license or state ID if the noncitizen applicant does not have a green card or valid visa (the rules vary by state).

I just realized that the EAD and AP are free if filed together with I-485 (Cost is $1010). So it does not hurt to file the EAD.

Actually, AP and EAD don't have to be filed together with the I-485 to be "free", they can be filed afterwards while the I-485 is pending. As long as the I-485 is pending, there is no extra charge for the AP and EAD, not even for renewals. Since the August 2007 fee structure, they are included in the $1010 fee.
