How did your marriage go? Pizza nahin bheja phir :-( Is your spouse ready to fly yet? Please give us an update.

Anycase I am going to desh after becoming USC. With the usual paranoia I have now tension (dr said everything has been ok though) and want to know some details of traveling with US Passport.

1) How goes it in desh immigration and customs lines?
2) How is the general life in desh now (I went there last in 2000 Dec).
3) Cost of living ideas? (this helps me in carrying some cash)
4) Train journeys (any improvements etc)
5) Any ideas if I can carry a light weight stroller (from walmart of course) on flite and use it for our 3 year old baby?
6) can I ask more?

TIA

Still in Desh. Trying to DCF to avoid all the other hazzles

1) Indian Immigration is still v v slow. No big diff for Indian or US Pass. No customs hazzles for me
2) In the metros - much improved - modernized and fast. Too much traffic. No more old cars in India (hard to see Fiats and Ambassadors in Chennai)
3) Expensive per Indian standards esp Flying. Train is still ok. Carry ample cash or Trv Chq with you
4) AC train journey is pretty nice!
5) ????? dunno
6) Who is to stop you?

Yes, you can take a small stroller on the flight............comes very handy on the airport........but is not of much use in India, especially if walking in rush hour.

Any ideas on how is the baggage handling situation in Bombay airport?

Last time I went, all people stand near a rolling platform and the luggage is automatically removed and put on floor - so that no one can walk or carry a cart around. It was a big mess. I guess it is still the same if not worse.

Also about how much time to get out luggage out after getting out of the immigration lines? Any help is appreciated. TIA

Same situation in Bombay. They will dump all the luggage on floor because conveyor belt is too small to keep it. You need to pierce throu people without trolly to get there. But immigration lines are more organized and fast compare to past. You dont need to wait much to get the luggage after immigration(atleast that's what happened to me this year).
My only tips: (1) If you go near conveyor belt to pick up the luggage on floor than have someone take care of your handbag and trolly meanwhile.
(2) While you try to collect your luggage, some porter looking people may approach you and offers you to clear your custom w/o any hassles in exhange of some money. Dont give a damn to them and just confidently approach the green channel(assume that you dont carry much of the new electronics goods!!!!)

Does anyone know of the INdian visa problems? My desi visa for 6 months, in the US passport does NOT have a photo though Chicago consulate wanted two photos. The idiots wanted two pictures and yet they won't show one picture on the visa? What sort of rules are these?

Would anyone face problems in Europe transits (I am goign via Frankfurt on Lufthansa) or in India at port of entry?

Secondly, should we carry our old Indian passports also? Please let me know. TIA

WBC,

Do yourself a favour and stop being paranoid. There is no problem with European Transits (esp if you are a PR/USC) . No desi visitor visa has a foto.

Why do you need your cancelled Indian passport ? Save it to get a PIO/OIC in the future..

US passport holders will not have any problems in almost all the countries, definetely not in any European countries.

or in India at port of entry?
That is why you have obatined a 6 month visa, isn't it?

No dude. It is the money I was concerned about. For PIO it costs lot more money for 3 visas than 6 mo visitor visa. Since you guys refused to share your Laxmi with me, I continue to search for low spending wayz. :(

Thanks all for everything. I am leaving on 28th and if you hear there is a plane crash (United/Lufthansa), be happy because my paranoia might be gone forever :)

Good luck everybody
