Hi Everyone,
I'm new to the forum, but wanted to find a group of people who were knowledgeable in immigration to possibly answer a few questions for me.
My husband just took his oath to become a US Citizen yesterday
It's been a looong process, but I am so glad it is over and it was one of the most emotional ceremonies I've ever witnessed. A little background: we initially went to someone to file the preliminary paperwork for us (I-130, I-864, I-485, etc.) and I thought she was a lawyer, but she was just someone who knew what to file and where. After the initial filing of those forms and my husband received his green card, I decided to just do the paperwork from that point on (removing conditions of his residency, Citizenship forms) to save on additional petitioner fees.
Since he is now a USC and over the age of 21, I want to get paperwork in order to file for his parents. Their situation is that they came to the US in 1999 and overstayed their visitor visas after they paid someone to do residency paperwork and the guy ripped them off. Then September 11th happened and they couldn't do anything. So they are here. I have called immigration and they have been pretty helpful in what forms to file. My understanding is that I need to file a Form I-130 for my husband petitioning on behalf of his parents and also an I-864 Affidavit of Support. Do I file those at the same time? And then I file form I-485 once I get form I-797 saying form I-130 has been received and is being processed. Do I also have to send form I-765 so they can work? Does any of this make sense to anyone or am I completely off? Am I missing forms? Do I have too many forms? lol! Also, what information do I send with the forms? Visas? Birth certificates? Tax documents? Marriage certificates? Lease agreements?
Because I wasn't the one to file for myself and my husband initially, this part is confusing me and sending my brain into a tailspin. I want to help them file to help them save petitioner fees, so I'm hoping that some of the knowledgeable folks here can help me out. Please feel free to ask additional questions if needed.
