Outside of US after N-400 filed

I filed N-400 back in October 2006 but still haven't received interview notice due to name check pending. If I have to leave US to work in a foreign country for an extended period of time, how/whether will the time after N-400be counted for purpose of physical presence/continuous residence? I recall some posts saying that those days won't count according to some documented response from USCIS. Thanks.

You need to be a USC in order to workin in another country like you are describing. If you do that while your N-400 is in the process it will be considered as abandoned and also you might have issues with your Green Card after. You need to wait till you get your Oath Ceremony and US passport before going anywhere for an extended period of time, and especially if you are considering working.

Which is more important, living in the US and being a USC or taking the job and risking everything?

If you must work overseas while trying to be naturalized, you'd better get yourself protected by an N-470, otherwise it is extremely likely your case will be denied.

Do some research in this forum - there is plenty of prior material covering this topic.
