Out of Status - Urgent

I went to US in 2003 with F1 Visa, and my OPT expires in May 2006. Before OPT expires, I enrolled in another program in the same school. Got the new I 20, admission and checked in at the International center. ( I was told by the international center that I can stay at US legally for 5 month before new term begins).

The courses started on Aug 28th 2006. and now because of family issue, I have to go back to china. I plan to quit my F1 Status. The International Center told me that if I quit now, I am out of Status. Because my OPT expired already?


I am confused!!! I am already in the New program and got the new I 20. Why I am out of status if I quit now?

Hi,
I would contact your International students advisor and figure why would be out of status and the steps you can take to maintain your status. The International students office is best suited to solve student related issues. Hope this helps.

Based on my F1 Status and understanding, in case you need to go to your country for a family reason, you can take a semester off, and come back. There's no question of being out of status. In fact i've done this too.

If you intend to stay more than 4 or 5 months then a new i 20 would have to be issued.
