Out of F1 Status

If you fall out of F1 status and have to travel out of and reenter the US to regain status with a new I20 - do you need to apply for a new visa even if your old one has not expired and will not be expiring any time soon? Thank you.
 
Question about possible out of status

I am on an F1-visa, and completing my PhD in June and going back...my old passport expired on Jan28, 2007 and a month and a half before its expiry I applied for renewal. The problem wsa the renewal took two months so I got it only Feb 10th. I am worried whether this means I am out of status. I talked to a school advisor who said it is not a problem , but I want a second opinion. I am otherwise on good standing and set to graduate
