[Other topic] Does this site generate any money?

Guys, would you care to discuss the financials of running this site? I always wonder if the site owner makes any money on this. I am sure he will be getting people attracted to his services. But does that break even with the cost of maintaining this site, since there are no ads on this site and the owner has to pay the administrators and other staff?

I did an e-commerce course

( yea i know i am not very bright) dealing with things like that.

We analyzed many online communities/boards to see if they can generate revenue. The results were mixed but predominantly... NO! Its very difficult to make people pay subscription/one-time to join a community. But then the biggest asset of ebay is its "community". It all depends on the business. This board probably did give some benefits to people like Rajiv Khanna. I mean I wouldnt have heard about some lawyers if it wasnt for this. There might be a lot of clients who will seek RK because of this site but thats sort of intangible. I wouldnt mind paying a small one-time fee like maybe $5 to be on the site.

So to answer ... its a maybe. It depends on the business. Yahoo boards are crap but msdn boards are pretty useful. People might pay to be a part. People spend a lot of money on dating sites. Thats probably why Yahoo started charging ( dont ask me how i know ;) )

Speaking of forums that charge money - there is this community by Fools.com that is charging money and I guess is making money and I think people are still glued to it. I think this is analogous to comparing this with HBO and free cable.

If this site has to generate profits, attorneys who are frequenting this web-site should have to pay the site owner some money. This will help in two ways - one to help the site keep running and the other would serve him/her to become popular and advertise.

I really like the current setup where there are no ads on this site. But, I guess it cannot continue like this forever as you need a lot of money to keep this site running. Or since they have our email addresses, are they making money by selling to third-party so called partners? I donn't see any effect on my inbox because of this though - but it can happen in future.
