OT RANT: Sensenbrenner/Frist Bills

I don't usually rant on these boards, but I read something this evening that really annoyed me.

Many of you will be familiar with the Sensenbrenner/Frist Bills that may soon be passed that will make undocumented workers felons, or to even be in this country without proper papers a felony. I am also sure that the vast majority of people on these boards - having endured USCIS procedures for obtaining legal residence - probably don't mind some of the provisions of the bill. What I found particularly annoying was this quote I read on CNN:

"Sensenbrenner said in a statement last year that his bill would help 'regain control of our borders and prevent illegal immigration' as well as 'help strengthen and promote our compassionate and welcoming legal immigration system.'"

Now, for those of you stuck in name checks, retrogression, family limbo because you cannot bring your loved ones from overseas, or any of the other bizarre bureaucratic labyrinths as you travel the USCIS path to legal residence, I am sure you were as offended as I was by the liberal use of "compassionate" and "welcoming" in Sensenbrenner's speech.

It would be a fine thing if the flip side of this proposed legislation was to truly expedite the legal course of action for immigrants. Funnily enough, I didn't see anything in the Bills or the speeches that addressed THAT issue.
