Original or copies of documents required for I539

I want to apply for an extension of stay for my mother in law (she entered on a visitors visA)

I have most of the paperwork ready -

The question I have is do we need to send
- original I-94 and
- passport
or would copies be sufficient. I was not too sure about that.

Nope you absolutely DO NOT need to send the original I-94 or the original passport. Copies of both ar all that is needed.

I got an approval for my dad's extension and I had sent only copies of these documents..

Yes, Sab28 is correct.

Application doesn't even ask to send passport in original. Just a copy.

Though form I-539 for ext. mentions to send original I-94, don't send it.
Just a copy is ok. I have done sent only a copy twice to get approvals.
