An English friend of mine, here in the U.S. illegally, was questioned by the police for a minor traffic problem (his car rolled from his driveway into his street) - somehow it came out in the discussion that he was an illegal immigrant. Border Patrol were called, he was arrested and he's now in jail in San Diego (I assume) under deportation proceedings.
We've got an attorney lined up for him, but I was curious what his chances are here? Will an attorney actually be able to do _anything_ for him?
I'm not trying to make any excuses, or find any loopholes for him, He knew the risks he was taking when his original visa ran out and we all told him he should sort things out legally, but he left it too late. I'm just trying to find out what (if any) his options are.
I have a feeling that he's going to be deported regardless, but perhaps an attorney might make the process less permanent.
Any thoughts?
At the moment we've just told him to shut his mouth until the attorney is present.
