Optimal currency exchange process in India

Folks,

this subject is a bit out of context in this forum, but I could not find any other more appropriate one so thought I could solicit some advise here. Further, in the "after green card" forum, I guess most of us a relatively relaxed in contrast to our "before green card" situation, so I hope some people do not mind my asking the following!

I wanted to know what is the best way to exchange/encash money when you travel to India. Typically, one takes travellers cheques, uses the US issued credit card etc. there. But in these cases there is a commission charged ( sometimes a good amount). I wanted to know what is the best way to deal with this. Is carrying dollars and changing them at a bank there better from a rate and commission aspect? (for instance, using your bank\'s affiliated ATM in places like Canada and europe provides the best deal).

Can people shed light on how to go about this in hte best way. Thanks

Get Traveller Cheques,

From Credit Unions (e.g. TechCU in BayArea), since they are non-profit organisations, they don\'t charge any fees for those cheques. You can easily encash those cheques abroad and its the safest way to carry money.
Ofcourse you can carry dollars and get better rate, but you also carry a risk of loosing them
