Can a person who is on OPT, cancel the OPT after 6 months and use the remaining 6 months after graduating again? Any experiences? Will INS accept that?
 
Not possible

No. OPT once applied and used cannot be cancelled. You can cancel the same before using it but once you start using it runs for the entire duration for which the same is issued

PEopl from INS will tell you different things. If you talk to them over phone, the answer probably going to be no. But if you go to the office, there are many things can be done. I personally had the same problem but I did not know that I could cancel the training. The guy at INS told me after it had expired. I am still a student so I was able to get another practical training for another 9 months.
