Hello,
My F1 expires on September 2012 and I have graduated from my US school. I have a current OPT and I am working in a company in US. I would like to make a trip to India in December 2012. This is currently difficult as my expired F1 would cause trouble for re-entry and the other alternative that is F1 renewal outside US is also very unlikely as I have graduated.

However, I am considering the following situation which legally sounds do-able to me:

If I obtain a canadian tourist visa from US, then enter canada from US, then go to india from canada and then return to canada using canadian tourist visa and finally re-enter US from canada, would that be an issue?

Since US-Canada trips are allowed on expired F1 and current OPT and canadian toursit visa would allow me to fly to and fro canada. Both canadian border and Us border agents cannot raise any flags. Can anyone advise on this?

You can only use automatic visa revalidation for travel that ends in Canada.
You can not travel anywhere else from Canada. You would then need a new visa to enter the US.
And the border people will know if you traveled outside of Canada.

F1 expired and travel on OPT (F! renewal)

Hello

My F1 is about to expire in July 2013. I applied to OPT STEM extension. Now once I get extension I need to travel to India.

But my F1 stamp will be expired and I will be on OPT. How safe is it to get new F1 visa from India. I am reading about this on different websites, and some people says they got their visa denied.

Can someone provide first hand information.

Thanks

Hi,

Were you able to travel with the expired visa? If yes, then please share how.

Thanks

No, I was not able to travel. I called everyone from DHS, to US embassy in Delhi to my university.

Leaving canada for another country is not a good idea. The agent told me on phone that is not permitted. the only legal option is to get F1 visa renewed from US embassy. But chances of happening that are very rare if you have graduated and have a job as technically you are not pursuing a degree anymore, so renewal of F1 visa can be denied. One of the boston bomber's friends was also overstaying their F1 visa, so getting extension on F1 visas without adequate justification would be even more risky now.
