OPT to H1B...now or at end of OPT?

Hello,

I have graduated from a US university and got a job offer. I start work
May, 6. Since I'd like to stay in the US longer, I'd like to know if I should
ask my employer to file for H1B now?

As far as I know, if I stay on OPT and wait until April, 2006 to start the
H1B process, I won't be able to start working again before October, 1?
That means I would be out of status from May, 6 until October, 1 (5 months)and have to leave the country...

Is this right, is my best chance to ask them to file H1B now?

Thank you

You are correct. It is best to apply now.

Thank you.
Thing is I am a bit weary of telling them to apply for H1B now when I
haven't even started working. I plan to prove myself as a valuable asset
first and then ask for H1B in 2-3 months. Are the chances to get the H1B
if we fill in july/august still excellent?

If you are in one of the categories of skilled workers who are not subject to the H1B quota, you may, of course, apply and get an H1B at any time. However, chances are that you are subject to the quota, so it is almost certain you won't get an H1B if you apply in July/August. My suggestion would be to explain your circumstances to your employer and offer to pay back any expenses incurred by them in getting the H1B, should you leave within a certain period of time.
