If you want to be emailed about status updates, you have set up an account and register the receipt number(s).

But if you just want to check the status, you can directly enter the receipt number online.
 
Usually it's online within a few days, or maybe a week or two after they've issued the receipt notice.

But sometimes for whatever reason, for a few people it doesn't show up online at all.
 
I have been trying to see the status of my I-751 online for over two months now, it keeps giving me the "validation error". I have called the USCIS couple of times and each time they assure me the problem has been taken care off and I can see my status online in a weeks time and still the problem persists. I called again this morning and the lady told me bluntly, "it wont show online, you have to call each time when you need an update". She also told me that all looks good and therefore I need to wait for 6-8 months since Vermont Center is processing I-751 cases from April, 2008.
