On two companies' payroll at the same time(H1B), problem?

I just started working for my new company, but I am still on my old company's payroll (I was laid off, but my old company agreed to keep me on the payroll for a while). I did a H1B transfer from the old company to the new company. Do I have to inform my old company to stop my H1B on the first day I started working for the new company? Will overlapping be a problem?

Anyone else had this similar experiences? Thanks.
 
Legally, you can not work for 2 companies at a time.... i am not sure how it is going to affect your GC...
