well i got one question .Anyone knows about the oldest pending name check
for n400.So then we can get an idea how long it can be

It can get really long. I am not sure where you wanna get with your question ;) Think positive. Most applications go through without significant name check delays. My hypothesis is that people who have been longer in the country run a higher risk of hitting a snag on the name check. There is a document that details from which year the FBI started collecting recors electronically. It seems the main problem is with checking paper records for old hits. Like anything, having an uncommon name and having been in the country for a short time would probably help expedite the name check.

Name check taking more than a year is not completely out of the question. Other than that, why worry if a case in a million takes two or three years to complete.

My 2 cents.

7 years 1 month or probably longer

I am copying a report from OMBUDSMAN with A CASE PENDING NAME CHECK FOR 7 YEARS 1 MONTH as of April 2006. ( I am sure this case lingered for a while after the report date)

It reads

"CASE PROBLEM
An applicant filed a naturalization application in March 1999 with a USCIS service center that had jurisdiction over the case. In August 2003, USCIS transferred the application to the applicant’s local USCIS district office for the applicant to be interviewed. The interviewing officer requested additional evidence at the interview, which the applicant provided in a timely fashion. When the Ombudsman received the inquiry in April 2006, the application remained pending due to an outstanding FBI name check and additional security checks."

I have also heard that there can be several reasons why name check can take a very long time. Some of them perhaps rather sad/unfair (origin of name, country of birth, ethnic background etc.). I am a Brit and have had my Green Card for over 20 years. that in of itself also presents a problem. The INS (then) went electronic around 1995. that means that for myself, the paper trail from 1983 to 1995, i.e. 12 years, is indeed on paper records only. They can be IN SEVERAL OF OVER 200 REPOSITARIES !!!!!! So, go figure how long my name check might end up taking .........

This also means that individuals with an electronic "paper trail" only, might indeed have a proportionately faster process.

Nothing can justify the name check hell

Nobody should be treated as guilty until it is proved.
This procedure needs to be modified completely with a fair one.
USCIS and FBI have all the sources to match somebody's name and birth date utilizing networks, emails, faxes etc. This can be solved in minutes not in weeks.
But the sad part is no government agency is working on the file until they are sued, then they clear the name quickly. Threads can be read under SUING USCIS section. It is so unbelievable to read that case pending for 2 years gets cleared all of a sudden, once the case goes to court.

For my self - approaching 4 years and still counting. The name check was sent to FBI on Jan. 12, 2003. Then again on June 17, 2004, and then on Sept. 5, 2006 and 4th time on Nov. 11, 2006. STILL PENDING AS PER MY SENATORS OFFICE VOICE MAIL LEFT ON DEC. 1, 2006.

My 2 cents.

"All man [human] are created equal"--I think it is one of the fundamental principle of the USA. Your comment, about a case (a person's application) is delayed two or three years does not matter because others' case going faster, contradicts fundamental principle.

More details?

Zur, could you please provide more details on your case?
What happenned? What kind of excuses are you hearing? Is there any reason for this delay that you are aware of? Have you tried to sue them?

Thanks in advance.
