I am not living and have been in my home country for more than 2 years. I have a police certificate and a birth certificate which I took with me when I left my contry.

Can I use these documents for a dv interview or do I have to provide a fresh version? If yes, how fresh do they have to be?

Many thanks for the answer.

Maju is right. Good for one year. (Source is my immigration lawyer.) You need a new police certificate. The birth certificate is okay.

Source is it is stated in the 2nd NL.

You also need a police certificate from all countries you have lived in - not just home country.

The consular staff have some discretion on the police visa

I have one more comment having completed my interview last month. The consular staff can be flexible on requirements such as police certificate providing everything else looks okay.
I had to get police certificates for four countries. I followed the correct procedure for three countries but messed up on the New Zealand certificate. I applied directly by post for the certificate. However what I should have done was sign a form at the US consulate authorising them to apply for the certificate on my behalf so it would be sent directly to them.
Only discovered this in the interview, however, as the rest of my paperwork was in order, they gave me a waiver.
However, it's not a good idea to rely on this. You should do your best to get all the necessary documentation.
