Off topic: Help for California Resident..

Though it is little off topic, some one in CA can answer my doubt. I recently moved to CAlifornia using AC21. I am in AOS now (485 pending) and no H1 visa and Stamp. My I-94 also expired long time back. I need to apply for CA driver licence. If I apply CA licence, what will be the validity period? What document I should show to the DMV to prove legal precence? As per DMV web site EAD card is the one document I can show. If I show EAD card, what will be the validity period of my dirver license? Will it be till EAD card expiration date? I am ittle concerned about this is because my EAD card expires with in 6 months. My current driver license from my privous state expires only in 2011.

Gurus Please answer ...

It is hard to say. According to the DMV website it is for the duration of your approval notice. My wife and I had the H1 and H4 approval notice that expire May '06, and due to what was mentioned on the webpage was expecting them to give the drivers license till May. '06. My wife's was expiring Nov. '05, and they gave it for 5 years. My one was expiring Jan. '06 and again 5 years. So, 2 months apart, but still 5 years. So, I don't know what to say. :-)

It took 1 year for me to get the driver license

I had the same issue. My visa has already expired when I tried to get my license in CA. I had to show my EAD card and had to take the written exam. After passing the exam, I was given 3 months Paper permit. And I was told that I would get a card after DMV verifies my information with USCIS. Every 3 months, I had to renew the paper permit as they hadn't verified my info. with USCIS. This went on for 1 year. Atlast, they gave me driver license valid for 5 years. This happened in March 2005.
 
When do they give for period of EAD and when for 5 years, I have got 2 extensions and each time, I was renewed till EAD expiry date.Its a real pain to go there every 10 months to renew this. :mad:

I recenty changed my out of state license to CA after 2years of stay.According DMV you should change your license withn 90days after you moved to CA. DMV issued drivers license till EAD expiry date. This is kinda pain.

Thanks for all you guys! I moved recently to CA. My EAD expiring in 6 months. What happens if I do not show EAD? Instead, can I show the I-140 approval and 485 receipt notice to show my legal status? If they give DL only for six months based on EAD it will be a pain in b---, to renew every one year. What is your thoughts..?
 
You can try that. If they don't like I-140 or I-485,you can give them EAD. They didn't even allow me to write the written exam. I had to wait until I got my EAD to write the exam. I think, it depends on the person who gives the DL. If the person doesn't know much about the immigration process, you may end up getting for 5 years.

Is it a rule in CA-DMV that persons with EAD will be given DL, till the end of EAD validity period? Are we required to write written exam even if we have valid out-of-state license?
