Off-site work for US client

I may be performing some off-site work at my home in Canada for a US-based client. If so, I will have to visit my client on their site several days each month, making at most two trips down there.

Do I need TN status for that? And if not, what do I say at the border when crossing into the US?

If your country of residence is Canada, then you will be paying taxes in Canada, and you would only need B1/B2 status for the few short trips you would make to the US as a business traveller. B1/B2 allows for business meetings, and if asked, you are simply going for business meetings.
