October Audit - Old-timers & Gurus, please read

Every year, the former INS used to blame the slowdown on processing during the month of October on their yearly audit, as their officers would be taken off the task of processing cases, and were told to count how many cases have been approved, to ensure the exact number of visa numbers that were issued for the year is correct. Some of the old timers might remember this, and it was always annoying when it happened, but we knew it was coming. There was no mention of the audit this year, and last year it was explicitly mentioned that the audit would not occur. Have they stopped doing the audit all together? Has anyone heard about the audit either happening or not happening this year? Has this been practice permanently stopped? Have they finally given this task to a select team, instead of removing resources from the adjudications department?

If it is permanently stopped, then how does USCIS count the visa numbers accurately now? Is there a new, more efficient system in place that I haven't heard about?

The numbers should be available immediately from their computer system. Why should they count them? Electing President? :p
