OCI, Visa, Passport Renunciation

Hello All,

I became a US citizen around 2004 and soon after obtained a 10 year Visa. At that time they asked for the passport to be mailed in and when it came back it had a "cancelled" stamp on it and the sides cut off. Now after all these years I am applying for OCI and they are telling me that it has to explicitly say "cancelled due to acquiring US citizenship" and want me to renounce my Indian Citizenship.

I don't know if this has happened to others but I searched and didn't find anything similar on the forum here. I think this is the biggest crock of $hit that they are pulling off and I am pissed off to say the least. Yes I know I am ventin but I would really like for someone knowledegeable on this issue to tell me if I have to bend over and take it or is there some other way?

Thanks

That unfortunately is the case, and you have no recourse. On the bright side, you will have to spend much less ($25 instead of $175) for this process. Check out the oddly named website:

Thanks for the reply nkm-oct23. I spoke with Travisa and after a long time on hold they basically told me "cancelled" stamp is not good enough! So I called the Chicago Consulate and none of the menu options I chose gave me the option to TALK to a person!

I can't tell you how pissed off I am at this stupid bureaucracy where I have renounce my "citizenship" not once but twice to obtain what common people refer to as "citizenship". And then I have to "renew" the so called sticker everytime my US passport expires.

Thanks again for listening to me vent and your reply on this topic is very much appreciated.

Actually you don't have to renew the sticker that frequently, once upon applying and only once again after turning 50 if you don't mind carrying you old US passport every time you travel. You also don't have to go through the renunciation again, the Indian passport with the proper phrase stamped on it should suffice for any renewal.

That's not what I meant about renunciation. Since technically cancelling the passport and obtaining the visa renounces the citizenship it was the first time and now that they want a different stamp I am essentially forced to renounce the same thing again.

Well, stupidity knows no bounds. One automatically loses Indian citizenship when you take oath of US citizenship. You cannot renounce something when you don't have it in the first place. This whole thing is simply a way to collect more money.
Agree with your frustration!!
