The vast majority of posters on this forum are OCIs (or are in the process of becoming OCIs), so obviously it's important for them, and no, it's not a must for anybody :)

The biggest (and in my opinion, most utilized) advantage is the lifelong visa you get - it's more economical than applying for visitor's or tourist visa multiple times throughout your life.

Read the OCI FAQs on any consulate website and if you have any specific questions re OCI and how it may or may not be applicable to your own situation, by all means, feel free to ask on this forum. And most likely, it has already been answered in one or more threads here :)

This kind of open-ended and all encompassing question is hard to answer without getting into a lengthy discourse or repeating, in many cases, what has already been said.

Great answer akgarg. :)

Well, atlraj all the information about OCI (or PIO or getting the Visa) is out on the web (including this forum). To tell you honestly, we can not do the research and thinking for you. It really helps to answer straight and specific questions.... Good luck.

No the OCI is not a must, you need not apply if you don't want to. The official websites of the Indian ministy have excellent details so you can read them to know if you want to apply or not.
