OCI for children whose passport is expiring

Our daughter is a PIO card holder. Her US passport expires in Jan 2008.
Can we apply for her OCI card now? I read that OCI is a sticker on a US passport. If her US passport is renewed in Jan, can the sticker be re-stamped?
The OCI visa sticker is valid for life. You can carry the old passport(with OCI sticker) along with the new passport.
According to the FAQs, available on the OCI website, you can also choose to obtain a new OCI sticker on the new passport, on payment of an extra fee. http://www.mha.nic.in/oci/oci-main.htm
You can apply now if you want. The OCI is valid even with the expired passport, that sticker looks just like the US visa actually. Read the guidelines on the web for the restamping, I doubt they can do the renewal in the US because the stickers are sent from India.
A simpler thing if you have no travel plans is to wait for her new pport and then get the oci.

The visa remains valid even after the passport expires but you would then have to remember to carry the old passport all the time or pay an extra fee to transfer it to the new passport

Or you can renew the passport early.Most countries require a passport validity of 6 months so you might as well apply for a new one.

I have a question related to this same issue. I am a Dutch Citizen (previously Indian).
Normally in Netherlands when your dutch passport expires and you apply for a fresh passport, your expired passport is taken back by the authorities. This would mean that your lifelong "U" visa will also be taken away. What should be done in this situation ? Can I easily get a new sticker on my new Dutch passport ?

Yes, on payment of an extra fee, you can get a new sticker on your new passport. A photocopy of your OCI registration card along with a cover letter, your new passport, fees and return postage is all that is required to be sent in.
