Obtaining SSN or TIN with F-1

Hi,

Does anybody know how to obtain a Social Security Number or a Tax Identification Number with a F-1 visa?
I went to the IRS and they refused to give me one for the reason I cannot claim to have taxes.
I need any of these numbers to be registered as a nurse in the US.

You should be able to go to your local Social Security Administration office and get your SSN without any problem. The SS card will say "Not valid for work without INS authorization". So go to your local SSA office and apply.
