O Visa after H1 6 years

My H1 6 yrs expires by dec '03. My Labor Cert was filed only 2 mon ago from NJ. But my employer says will file for a 1 yr extension. What kind of extension can work for me ?
My guess is it would be O visa. Can any one tell me if O visa can be applied for H1 visa expiries ? Has anyone had similar experiences ? If so can you please post your experience.
