I would like to know of how long it takes between the interview, oath ceremony, and obtaining passport. Also, what is the criteria for obtaining the passport on expedited basis.

I have to travel to native country and would like to get estimates in order to better plan the time of travel.

Time between interview and oath is entirely DO dependent, as well as other factors such as whether your files are all present and namecheck complete etc.

Once you take oath, you can apply for a passport immediately, and expect to receive an 'expedited' one in around 2 weeks. (Only requirement is to pay more money.) If you need one quicker than that, you can book an appointment at one of the 12 regional passport centers and get one same-day, but for that you must prove immediate travel need (show tickets, itinerary etc).

Can one leave the country just with the Naturalization Certificate

Post the interview/oath does USCIS invalidate the country passport of which I was initially a citizen of?

Could I leave the country post obtaining my Naturalization Certificate and apply for a passport at the Indian Counsal Office?

Once you become a USA citizen, you have to get American passport through http://travel.state.gov (various options mentioned there as boatbod presented.

You should also send only Indian passport to Indian embassy to cancel, check with you local embassy webpage. They will mark it canceled, remove the sides and return to you for any future reference. If you are applying to OCI, then people usually send passports with it and send an extra prepaid envelope which the embassy will use to return immediately. You will get the OCI in roughly 3-4 months these days. (current trend).

Your interview dates are in 2008, right?

Time Difference between Interview and Oath

Yes the interview date is Feb 27, 2008. I am on a business assignment in India to transfer NY based operations and cannot wait for an extended period of time.

Hence I was wondering what should I expect post the interview. Lawyer suggests that there is a 50/50 chance that post Interview they might take further time to perform name-checks, background check, etc. If these are done I was wondering what is the timeline to expect for the Oath Ceremony.

If the ceremony is say after 1-2 months, I prefer to return back and fly closer to the oath ceremony date.

PS: I was thinking of bypassing the OCI and get the PIO card which is obtained within 4 days, return to India and file for OCI.
