Answer) No you are not being overly optimistic. I can explain the disappearance, however. The INS database has a limit as to the number of records that can be shown in the automated system. When the limit is exceeded, the record no longer shows up. When something happens to the file that causes an entry to be made in the system (such as moving it into or out of the file room), the "missing" case "reappears".
