Not even 4 hours since the new online check

Registered Users (C)
link was posted people have started abusing it.

gc_dec apparently has been checking "several" I-485 numbers.

This reminds of me of people who used to post EAC numbers that were approved that werent theirs. They were apparently "researching".

Why do people always do this? I am curious.

Hopefully this new site will reduce the calls to the IIOs freeing lines for people who really need to talk with them.

Thanks

I was going to ask gc_dec where he got several EAC #'s myself, and you beat me to the issue.

Well I am wondering too:mad:

the question I have is...

what is the purpose of making this a secure site, if anybody can get info on anyone else's case?

they should have added another field to verify identity, something like last name/SSN/zipcode etc.

I guess it does not matter to ins who actually looks up data. Because they cannot do much with it. Thats why even the phone is not secured with any PIN or ID.

By "secured" they mean that people cannot look up the details based on the case number. For ex., people like gc_dec cannot look up people's names simply by entering new case numbers.

Yes, it is an abuse of the online system ...

Give a helping hand and they yank your arm off. Let us hope better sense prevails.

I don't agree with any of you!

First of all, please remember that US is a free country. There is a freedom of information.

gc_dec can very well check all possible cases. He is not invading anyone's privacy (because personal information is protected by INS). This is public information everyone has a right to run any EAC number (even if it is not his) through this web-site.

One good example of the use of public information is:
www.zazona.com

This guy has used the public information to create an LCA database that contains thousands of U.S. companies who hire H-1Bs. You can view H-1B applications by company name, job category, location, and salary. Find out which companies are hiring foreign workers and for which kinds of jobs.

Please do not discourage people if you don't know the meaning of the freedom.

we are not asking you to!

Legally many things are okay!

Legally you can sleep with your neighbor's wife
Legally Enron executives may not be guilty
Legally Ernesto Miranda walked

There is a lot of difference between "legal" and "ethical"

Misuse or exploiting a facility can be legal but it may not be moral!

Why do people want to check other case numbers?

Some have even posted the fill case number.

Re: we are not asking you to!

Your examples are out of context. However, it is good to know that we are in agreement as far as legality is concerned.

If I know you and your EAC number and use your EAC number to check your status, then it is morally wrong.

However, if I don't know who the EAC number belongs to, and use it to gather some statistics, it is not morally wrong.

There is a big difference between "Other case number" and "Other's case number".

For those who think that u are not abusing the system Visit this link

http://www.ups.com/tracking/tracking.html

Read the Notice on the site that clearly states that one can use the system only to track your shipment.

Now, you may state that INS has not posted the above notice on its site and that gives a right to anybody to abuse the system.

Well, I leave you to draw your own conclusion and the consequences.

useless

Even trying to do stats is useless.
an EAC number ending with 123 could be I-485,
and 124 could be H-1 receipt number.
So running a robot that will collect the info for a range
of numbers will not tell you anything about a particular
visa type.

cheers

Originally I do not want to waste my words here. But since it got refreshed time to time and gc791188's comments still make those "Moral" guys unhappy. I put my 2 cents.

First the purpose of this site is give people a free space to share each other's info, thoughts and ideas to benefit everyone.

Second if INS does not say:"it is not allowed ..." it should be moral to get statistics from online checking and the statistics is a help+ to all of us. Do not compare it with UPS's tracking number. that is totally different thing with different motives. Why do you want to track other one's UPS tracking number? you want rob Sth? But if some institutes are gothering data on how UPS works from the tracking system, you want to say it is not moral??? the statistics maybe help UPS to improve their works.

Third one is even we are almost all honest people here but there are still some bad guys post fake info on this site. but INS do not give fake messages. If it is legal, if we have time we can get lots of useful data from the online checking, like:
(1) Some smart guys maybe know how to calculate the RD range from reicpt number then get how long a I-485 case can get approved.
(2) What kind of messages INS give us and usually what does it means. i.e., for I-485, there are
"Fingerprint Processing Complete-Non-Ident "
"Fingerprint Processing Complete-Ident "
"received"
...
...

A lot of useful data. Keep in mind!!! these info are helpful to all of us. These info do not hurt anybody. If INS monitor this site maybe it can help them to improve their work also.

finally if someone has time and like to gother some useful statistics for us. you are well welcome!!!

OK I am back

gc_dec and freaked:

INS does tell the type of application just below the EAC number. I get this for my EAC -

Application Type: I485, APPLICATION TO ADJUST TO PERMANENT RESIDENT STATUS

AMBYASASAM:

I was aware of UPS disclaimer even before posting my message. I still maintain that UPS information is private information, but EAC message is not. For following reasons:

1) UPS is a private company (not a GOV organization). They have a right to protect their shipment information. By running tracking numbers through their sites, their competitors can find information about UPS delivery route, cycle time, demographic information. These information are their intellectual property. I feel, this is the most important reason for shipment tracking not being a public information.

2) People can rob a person if they track the shipment in conjunction with the UPS truck movement. As pointed out clearly by gc_dec.

3) INS is a government organization. Unless it invades the privacy of another person, I have a right to these information. This is nothing as compared to the following information which are public and every American resident has a right to them:
a) Your criminal record
b) Your traffic violation record
c) Your car accident record
d) Of course the info used by www.zazona.com as posted earlier by me.
and much more...

There are laws to prevent discrimination as a result of these information.

4) I don't see any disclaimer (like UPS) at INS site, which forbids us from using this site for other EAC numbers. This is very important.
