Non-resident bying a house in the U.S.-is it a good idea?

Does anyone have experience with owning a house in the U.S. and being a non-resident (Canadian in my case - TN visa)? If I loose my job would I be allowed to stay until I resell my house ? Can INS take over my propery for some reason?
I will appreciate all comments.
Thanks.

we did buy a house, when we hadn't applied for GC. We have lived about 3 years in this house without any issues. The only guts we had was that both of us (husband and wife) were employed, so we would not come out of status at the same time. IF this is the case, I would say take the risk, you would be glad you did.

I think as long as you feel that your job is secure, and would be around for a few years, then why not? The only problem is to find a mortgage company that would lend you the money. I actually showed my purchase settlement to VSC to demonstrate our financial stability. I think it's definitely a smart move to buy a house than renting.

Thanks ... but I am still wondering what would happen with the house IF I loose my job. My job is secure right now but I want to be cautious - my wife and I had not a pleasant experience with INS before (nothing related to above mentioned). We just learned how picky they can be. My wife is a PR in Canada, and we have 2 small kids (born in the U.S.).
Any more ideas?

I don't think you should worry about it. We should all eventually get a green card if we have not done anything against the law. There are always ways you can deal with your house later. You can find a real estate agent to rent your house to someone else if you don't have time to sell it. I am not sure how much time you have if INS decides to deny your I-485, but you can always file for Motions ... (I hope it won't come to that!) then you should have some extra time. One can not worry about things so far ahead...
