Very Impt: Travel to India by Air India from Newark

Did anyone travel by Air India from Newark Intl Airport recently. I am travelling by economy class. I called up Air India to find about the baggage and they said that I can carry 2 pieces of check-in baggage and the L + B + H of the 2 pieces should not exceed 107 inches i.e The first baggage L + B + H should be not more 62 inches and the second baggage L + B + H should be not more 45 inches. Did this new rule come up recently. Couple of my friends and relatives travelled few months back and they could carry 2 pieces of luggage, the dimension of each luggage was 62 inches i.e L + B + H = 62. Appreciate your inputs and Thanks a lot.

if it is Air India alone but in February, when I was at Newark airport to drop a friend off, the check-in agent for British Airways remarked that his luggage were a bit on the heavier side. She mentioned that most airlines are soon going to decrease their luggage weight limit and we should be prepared to travel lighter than we are used to.
I don't know if your experience is a result of this move by the airlines or if it is due to Air India's exclusive strategy to counter rising fuel costs.

I went to India in Feb from JFK, New York and I didn't face any issues, I carried two large suitcases as I always do plus a handbag.
 
Febraury last week i sent my mother-in-law and Father-In-law to INDIA in AIR-INDIA with 2 big suitcases and 3 medium suitcases .There was no problem with luggage.

I and My wife went by AIr India on Jan 25th and I returned on 23 feb and wife returned on 15th march.
Same two standard big suitcases and 1 hand baggage per person
Air India- Newark-Paris- Bombay

No issues

News from BA

I went to India on Feb'04 through British Airways(BA). They told me that from April onwards their luggage weight is going to reduced from 32KG (70lb) to 23KG each of two. BUT at that time it was not confirmed, may be now. So, less gift, less expense.

Unbelievable.:D
