I would like to know, how to proceed with PMI certifications and what are the good resources for the exams. Thanks.

Here is what I did

1. PMBOK PDF file 2000 version
2. Two exam books with two to three full examples.
You don't need other books just for the exam.

There are some application forms to be downloaded from www.pmi.org. The test fee is $500+ include one-year membership which I consider a better deal than taking exam alone. After the application, PMI sends you a code which allows you to take the computerized exam in any day within 6-month.
137(?) out of 200 is the passing score. No deduction for wrong answers. So do making wild guesses.

The real test covers a little more ground than PMBOK.
Preparation timeframe: two to three months

In case you live in NYC and like enrolling in a class, I can recommend you one.

robertx71 ....

Can you please be elaborate on these...

1. PMBOK PDF file 2000 version
2. Two exam books with two to three full examples.

any names of the books or where can I find this (1) or the (2) ...

PMI PMP - Project Management institute certified "Project Management Professional".

The fee for the test is 550 for non-members.

The PMBOK is Project management Body of Knowledge. Its a $35 CD that you can get from Amazon or PMI. If you become a member of PMI ($100) they will give you a free copy and reduce your exam fee by $50.

It takes 2-3 months to prepare. No it is not neccessary to take classes but you need to have 35 hours of PM training to qualify for the test.

Another good book is one by Rita Mulcahy.

There is also a software from Rita's institute that is $399, if your company pays ir you can share it with someone, go for it. I am planning to take the test early next year.

PMI

1. PMBOK PDF file 2000 version
The PMBOK or the principal material you need to chew on comes with two flavors: hard-copy or electronic verion which is a pdf file.
It divides project management cycle as well as seven knowledge area.

There are two versions of PMBOK, 1996 & 2000. The 2000 version is the newest.

2. Two exam books with two to three full examples.

That's what I did to pass. I didn't attend any class. PMI online bookstore offers not many books with simulation tests.

3. Does it make sense to take classes?
These books are not enough to pass?
PMBOK itself mightn't be enough unless you're lucky. It has some distance from real test.

For 35-hour, there is no need to take any class to fulfill. Your career training would be sufficient.

In NYC, there is a company called "knowledge mover" which offers PMI exam class. They claim 160-average score. It's better to let your company pay for it.

Thanks robertx71 and PatienceGC

Is it true that PMI certification hold good only for 3 years? and after that we need to re-certify again.

One more question: Where can I get books with two to three full examples? Is it available online at PMI or any book store? Thanks.

pmi has nice overview course

pmi (pmi.org) offers nice 5 day web overview course.
Costs about 600$ - i took that course and was very helpful to get my PMP.

Good luck,

Phaedrus

PMP certification is valid for 3 years like any other certifications (Microsoft). In order to continue have it, you need to take some courses or you need to take that exam again.
