No SS card after 6.5 weeks

I have been waiting so long, I'm getting frustrated. I spent all morning trying to speak to someone in the field office (Baltimore) and after 2 hours they finally answered the phone - only to be told it was still waiting verification from USCIS. I'm worried that maybe it's lying somewhere forgotten so I called USCIS and spoke to an IO. She told me it's out of their hands since they've already approved and issued the EAD. It depends on when the Field office submitted it for verification AAAAAAAAArrrrrrrrrrrrrgggggghhhhhh!!

It bugs me because I know that Baltimore is the issuing centre for the whole nation.

Anyone else in SS misery like me??

When you applied for the SS # they would have given you a letter stating it may take up to 4 weeks for you to receive your number. Since it it already 6 1/2 weeks since you applied, you will need to visit the Social Security office again.

Take the letter with you.

Hi Homealready:

In New York City, Manhattan. If you apply SSN in Federal Plaza, downtown NY, it will take up to 12 weeks to issue. No exception. Only the above address. Other places in New York City only takes 1 or 2 weeks. First apply and second apply for lost both toke me 12 full weeks.

Good luck to you.

Hi Eleanor :)

Strange how these processes can be so inconsistent from one place to another!
The application is so simple, I thought it would be quick and painless.

What I don't understand is why USCIS don't send the EAD approval info automatically (electronically/immediately/concurrently) to Dept of SS. does it take that long to update SAVE database?

IMO it's crazy that Immigration give you a document to present to DSS and then DSS have to turn right round and verify it with the issuing agency again!!!
Might as well make it part of the I765 then! Include the SS-5 as part of the package!!!

Seems to me, in this electronic age, 12 weeks is excessive.

Sorry, rant over! - I feel better now :)

You will need to personally visit the SSA office. I went to change my SSC after changing my immigration status, and it took them about 3 weeks to send me the card....

So, just make sure you visit...don't call...

I'm glad you feel better now. It delayed my whole process of setting up bank account and getting driver license back then. I was so aggravated. Tell you the secret. My sister had an interview in Federal Plaza. It took her 2 hours to get her gc. Our lawyer declared that this was the longest interview he's ever had. The IO closed to ask my sister to do the DNA test. Luckily my sister still had some sense of humour. She said to my dad she was so afraid if the test came out my dad is not her true dad after many years in her life. Finally everybody was laughing in the interview. Federal Plaza in NY downtown is the notorious one in New York City. I am glad I move out to that part of town. I think I will have my interview in Garden City.

Cheers,

Good luck with it all Eleanor! Someone wrote on another site that it's best to take all this immigration stuff as an adventure.

Some day (hopefully in the near future) it'll be an experience we can put behind us, and laugh about.

G'night!

Good night.

still no ssn. Paid the field office a visit and they say there's nothing they can do, till USCIS update my status ie Authorized for Employment. The SS agent went into the computer to see if I was authorized to work and therefore eligible for SSN, and lo and behold they still haven't updated it.

Just great! So still in Limbo!!

good news though is that I now have a job, despite this SSN debacle.

My mom's social security card arrived after about 2 weeks. Sadly, no sign of her physical GC yet, although she does have an I-551 in her passport.

Hi Homealready:

I guess you are not home yet (lol)...

It took me 7 1/2 weeks to get ny SS Card (Miami, FL.). Even if they tell you that they still can't verify your information with USCIS, your card might be on the way. I received my card on friday and I had called 2 days prior to that, and yet they had told me that they could not verify the information.
So be patient...
By the way, I have an interesting thread named: "I still have not received my Social Security Card" written aroun mid september. Go read it.
