No longer married to a US citizen

Hi,

I'm Swiss and entered the US with a student visa in December of 1993. While I was here, I married a US citizen (and obtained permanent resident alien status through him), whom I divorced 6 years later.

For almost 7 years now, I've been living with another person (a US citizen) -- we bought a house together, but never got married. We do not have any children.

My green card will expire in February 2007. My question is: Will I have any trouble to renew my green card, since I obtained one by getting married to a US citizen, but have been divorced for several years?

Also, note that I did notify the INS of my changes of address, but not of my change of civil status, as I did not change my last name when I got divorced (don't know if that has any importance.)

Thank you for any information you can give me. I'm pretty worried about all this :\

I would say that the only thing you must do is to report your change of address.

You should not have any trouble, since you are a legal permanent resident and you are divorced legally and all that, so I don't see why could be a problem? You don't have to report your divorce to the USCIS only change of address.

You can keep your married name if you want, that does not mean anything...if you want to change it then you must proof that your maiden name is X and the explanation of the change is your divorce decree. But that is a personal choice has nothing to do with USCIS.

Now, since you need to renew your card, inform of your change of address, so you don't have any complications to receive your new card. By law, it is suppose that you must report your change of address long time ago...but I don't know what can be the consequences of it right now when they really do not enforce those kind of faults.

Even if you marry the person with whom you are living, there is no problem with it since you have been legally divorce long time ago, you have an unconditional green card...and you don't have to apply anything through him or report that you got marry again or something like that. At least, that is what I know and observerd in other cases.

In any case you can get an INFOPASS in your district office and check that out by yourself to be sure.

Good luck,

you'll be OK...but also...would you like to become an american citizen?...if you do...you can do it right away...(~6 moths proceess), and since you have 6 yrs as LPR...they won't even ask about your divorce...
