I never went to get a I-94 because my attorney said it won't be necessary when I'm ready to apply for adjustment of status.

Is he right or I have been wasting precious time?

What do you mean you never got an I-94, did you lose it?
Because when you were aproved for asylum, they must have sent you a new I-94, detailing your new immigration status, or class of admission as an asylee.

When I applied for GC, my attorney told me that I had to have an I-94 to apply, the asylum aproval letter only was not sufficient.

I never had I94 and I had no problems. I got my asylum in2000 when INS was not giving i94 to asylees.

When, your asylum is approved by an officer, you automatically have your I-94 issued to you.But if this is approved by a judge, you only have a letter. If you need a I-94,you have to apply for.The approval letter issued by a judge is enough to apply for your I-485.I-94 is not necessary.

oh you guys are awesome as always

I trusted my attorney because he hasn't let me down so far and he knows how the system works but I needed your input.
thanks

I was approved by IJ as well and I never got my I-94, just an approval order. You should go to your local USCIS office and they should issue one for you for free. That's what I did. However I had to wait for 4-5 months to get one. It says that you've been granted asylum and the date of your asylum approval on it. All you need is just to fill I-102 form and attach it with the copy of the IJ order and a copy of your ID I believe. I remeber that I had some problems with the application itself because it was a little bit tricky. So you might want to ask the clerk in your local USCIS office how to fill it out correctly.
