no EAD, can I show my employer the approval email instead?

Just a thought here. Any input will be greatly appreciated.

I haven't received any email update of my EAD card progress, and no EAD in my mailbox either. When I went to get my iEAD infopass on 5/31, the infopass woman said my EAD was approved by 5/25, so I did not get the iEAD. But later, my online status said my EAd was approved on 5/31. Apparently there's something weird that made the approval appear on a different date. That's only my story background. Here is the problem.

My employer wanted me to start on 6/12. They are also waiting for me to get the card so I can start working. I do have the approval email and online status shown my EAD was approval on 5/31. If I still don't have the actual EAD by 6/12. Can I just go to work and show my employer the printout of my approval online status saying it's really coming? Does the online status "approval" means anything official? Official enough to temporary replace the EAD card and start to work? Does my EAD 1-year term of legally working already start by the time it's approved, or would the time period start at another time?

Anyway, I also scheduled another infopass on 6/13, to get my iEAD second time. So this is my plan B, if my plan A above fails. I Hope I won't need to do this, as long as the printout of my online status works as official approval document.

Thanks for all your time to read through this long question.

It depends on your employer, some take it some dont. So ask the HR manager and they will tell you. Also you can start work and not get pay until you get your EAD.

If your EAD was approved on 5/31, you should definitely get it by this week. I don't know if the DO would issue you an iEAD if your case was approved and it hasn't been 30 days since your last update. But you can give it a try. The EAD is normally valid from the day it was approved. By law, you need to have the EAD to start working, but if your employer would let you start with the printout, by all means, go for it.

You may receive it before the your infopass appt. It looks like our applications were processed in the same batch. My online status shows approval date of May 31st also. I received the card yesterday - the effectivity is starting May 25th -- this could be the reason that infopass lady gave you this date.

Good luck! :)

Employers give a grace period of a couple of days to submit your documents after you join. If you cannot produce them, your employer can no longer allow you to work. You cannot however get paid till you get your SSN (if you dont already have one).

Also, iEAD is issued when the EAD is pending. If your EAD is already approved, iEAD will NOT be issued.

It's true what Ari4u said, I will start work this Monday and I was told that I have a couple of days (MAXIMUM) to fill out all the necessary forms (for which you need the EAD).

If by Wednesday you don't receive anything I guess you can try showing them the email. It's just a delicate situation. I do think you should keep them informed on you case, you don't want them believing everything is OK and then drop the bomb that you don't have your EAD yet.

Good luck!!!

Email is not sufficient, you have three days from the day employment begins to show your card or termination ensues.

Plus you and the employer must fill out (the employer must certify that indeed you have those documents) the form I-9 (Employment Eligibility Verification)and there are specific things to show as proof of authorization to work.

You should received your EAD soon. If you don't have a SSN then after your EAD arrives I hope you get soon your SSN because your employer need that as well to collect your taxes.

Good luck,

Thanks so much everyone! I did get my EAD card yesterday. I went to see my employer to pick up the drug test form earlier yesterday. By the time, I got home, I saw something from USCIS in the mail. I tried to feel what is in the envelope by touching. When I opened it, I just couldn't help to scream!!! My new shining card!!! So no more worry! I just started my first day of work today. I am absolutely happy to be back on work force again after so many months of unemployment.

I apologized for all the panicking earlier. I am too worried for the card while my employer was waiting for it also (I know I am not the only one, it's human nature :p). Yesterday while I called my employer, he was actually relieved because of less trouble for him too. Today when I went to work in my first day, I just brought my new shining EAD card, DL, SS card, and marriage license (since I have no time to change my last name in any document, it is really handy to have it.) All set there. Work started!

wify246: You're right on the date thing. My EAD showed valid from 5/25/06. Thanks for the clarification.

Thanks for everyone's time and responses.
