Nigeria is the most populated country in Africa. There are many universities and technical schools which produces a number of certified professionals each year. So, it is no surprise to see Nigerians applying for the DV Lottery in big numbers.
Winning a DV Lottery doesn’t guarantee that you will be issued with a visa, it will only give you a chance to apply for the American immigrant visa by paying the non refundable visa fees. At the interview you must satisfy the visa issuing officer of your eligibility to get a visa.

What is the eligibility to apply for the DV Lottery?

According to USCIS Nigerian born people can apply for the DV program.

Education must have successfully finished 12 years of education including primary and secondary education equivalent to USA high school certificate.
Or should have 2 years of work experience in a job within the past 5 years after finishing 2years of education/training to perform the job. You can check the DOL Onet web site for the job category.

A person can apply only one entry (whether he applies or someone else applies), if more than one entry is submitted with a person's name as primary applicant, all entries will be rejected without notice.

Married person must include spouse and all the unmarried children who are under the age of 21, failure to do so will disqualify from the program.

Winners will need a sponsor's support from a person who is living in USA.

Winners who are already living in USA legally can contact the USCIS to change the status, if they can do it before 30th September.

The Lottery is free to enter, although the winner must pay the non-refundable visa fees and the diversity processing fee at the time of the interview to the US Embassy only.

Winners will be notified by postal mail only, between the month of May and July.

No visas will be issued after 30th September for the year's program.

Be warned if you get any notification by Emil, phone or by fax, double check them. And don't send any money by bank draft or any money transfer service.

For the DV Lottery 2008 nearly 8,773 Nigerians were notified as winners.

Nigerian Winners name list will not be available anywhere.
The US Embassy or the Consulates also can't provide the names of the winners.

DV 2009 winners who are selected by the computer random draw are being notified now. This will continue till July 2008.
Issuing of the visas will start in October 2008 and will end in 30th September 2009.

DV lottery Visas were issued to Nigeria in the past as

1995 2,408
1996 4,359
1997 2,605
1998 3,185
1999 3,112
2000 2,821
2001 2,684
2002 2,279
2003 3,119
2004 2,959
2005 2,379
2006 2,942

If you are a DV Lottery winner make all your certificates ready and wait for the interview. Rescheduling the interview date will reduce the chance of getting a visa as less visas available and more winners are there.
