New to n400 : can this be done by self or do we need a lawyer

Not at all. I have never heard of anyone using a lawyer for N400. But then, if you have extra money, there is no harm in using a lawyer.
 
it depends from case to case...if u have something to worry about that u have done in the past 5 years,a lawyer is necesary.
if u have been a law abiding person with nothing to worry about you might as well donate it to the red cross!

I agree.
For a normal case like OP said, paying a lawyer is a waste of money.
That money, instead of making a rich lawyer richer, can be donated to...Salvation Army.
