New SS#?

Question: What happens if you have already lived in the US for a while, have a valid SS# and then go home for CP? If everything goes well and you get a GC, do you get to keep your old SS# or do they assign a new SS# to you? Does anyone have an idea? Thanks!

u keep thesame number

You can apply to have the restrictions removed from your first SS card. Your number will stay the same only the SS card will not say 'valid for work only with INS (now DHS) authorization'.

Thank you all, that's good to know. You know it is funny, I am aware that usually it says "work only with INS authorization". However, my SS card did not have any restrictions printed on it when I received it back in the day. Strange. Anyways, thank you all very much.

if it dosen't have any restrictions on it, then i wouldn't worry about it. But i don't know if Social security will make changes that u are now a permanent resident so that u don't have problems in future when its time to start getting social security if indeed social security dosen't go bankrupt by then. :D

To elaborate on my own questions....:)

I went to the SS office today! It has been 6 weeks since the my arrival back in the US. Since my SS card never had any restrictions on it, I decided NOT to order a new one. However, the SS officer told me that I am required to let them know that I became a permanent resident. So I guess technically you are required to let the SS folks know, even if you don't (want to) order a new card.
