New Passport/Renewal

My current Indian passport valid for 10 years is about to expire and I am trying to renew/get new passport. I have the following questions based on that? Could someone please answer it?

1) DO I have to RENEW the existing passport or apply for a NEW PASSPORT?
2) What APPLICATION FORM and ASSOCIATED DOCS should be submitted?
3) Will the CURRENT PASSPORT be returned if a NEW PASSPORT is provided?

=> You need to submit the Old Passport for renewal.

2) What APPLICATION FORM and ASSOCIATED DOCS should be submitted?

=> You can download the form from indian embassy web site. you need to send copy of your current H1 visa showing your legal status in USA, Renewal Fee, Old Passport Original.

3) Will the CURRENT PASSPORT be returned if a NEW PASSPORT is provided?
=> yes, your old passport/CURRENT PASSPORT will be returned, along with new passport, both will be tied together, they will put Calcel/Void stamp on the old passport pages.

ISSUE OF NEW PASSPORT

Application for a new passport can be made six months before date of expiry or within one year of the expiry of the passport.

Requirements for issuing new passport are:

(a) Duly completed application form filled in BLOCK LETTERS in expanded form using black/blue ink only (see Application Form for an Indian Passport)

(b) Four latest identical passport size photographs depicting the applicant’s facial features against a light background;

(c) In cases, where the passport has already expired beyond a period of one year, the Applicant should submit an affidavit (see Annexure) and may have to appear personally before the Consular Officer;

(d) Two proofs of residence/mailing address in USA (photocopy of Driving license/ Lease agreement/ Utility Bills etc.);

(e) Alien Status (photocopy of US Visa/Green Card/ Work authorization card);

(f) Current Passport;

(g) Proper Fee (see fee schedule for details)

(h) Applicants for a new passport or additional booklet are required to submit a photocopy of marriage certificate, in case, the name of their spouse have not been included in their respective passports.

If the application is found to be in order and no prior reference is required to be made to the original Passport Issuing Authority, a new passport will be issued within 5 working/business days from the date of receipt of the application

Thanks for the replies. I have one other question related to procuring new passport. Could someone please answer?

1. Today I have a valid H1B visa stamp on my current
passport. After getting my new passport will the EXISTING H1B VISA STAMP (in the current passport) still be valid or what STEPS have to be taken to get a valid visa stamp?
2)If it is valid , how do I USE it when I travel?

Thanks everyone for the reply. I also want to get a PCC on the NEW PASSPORT when I APPLY to get a new passport . Hence it would be a NEW PASSPORT + PCC together. Based on this I have the following questions:

1) How do I REQUEST PCC in the NEW PASSPORT?
2) What APPLICATION FORM, DOCS have to be submitted to get it?
3) What is the FEES that I have to pay for PCC and can the payment be made in a SINGLE Money order/Bank Draft etc containing the fees of new passport + pcc on it + shipping charges?
4)How long does it take to RETURN the new passport + PCC+old passport?
5)If "Miscellanous form " needs to be filled out to get PCC
a) What do I REPLY for question 6) which requests for my "current passport No" ,"place of issue","date of issue"and "valid until". Since I am applying for a new passport and want a PCC on it I don't have this information ?

First of all why are you applying for new passport. You are renewing your passport. For renewal you never need PCC. I have renewed my passport. Also if your H1 valid visa stamp is on old passport, then when you travel you need to carry both passports together. Never forget to carry your old passport. I had my H1 visa stamp on old passport, got my passport renewed - 10 yrs., and when i went India, I had two passports.
Best is call Chigaco consulate and ask for the procedure for renwal. I had done this almost 4 years back, so if any chnages then I am not sure. My spouse got his done almost 2 yrs. back & things were same - just send the form, recent passport size pictures, old ( original ) passport ....
 
Basically I need PCC because I am pursuing consular processing on my GC and as part of it they would need a PCC. Please let me know if you have answers on the PCC front.
 
Per my understanding the PCC is given by the local police station in India. I don't think (I may be wrong) that you'll get a PCC from the Indian Consulate. The Indian Consulate initates a PCC + other security procedure only if your passport was expired for more than one year.

Your best bet would be to get your new passport from here and ask your known ones in India to contact your local police station and obtain a PCC. This would turn out to be much simpler than what you're trying to do here. This is what I think.

One more point that nobody mentioned here that is in case you are applying your new passport by mail then make sure that you notorize all of the copies of supporting documents before sending it to consulate. Otherwise your process will be delayed or rejected. If you are applying in person then carry all originals alongwith copies of the supporting documents, they will see originals at the window and return these to you.

For in person application they will give you your new passport on the same day, for the mail processing they take about a week.

******When you get a new passport, they will write it or use stamp saying that, "passport holder has a valid visa in the old passport which is still valid" somthing like that.

PCC you can apply it in USA. Follow this thread to get the info..

I applied it for Canadian immigration purpose. You have to clearly say what purpose you are requesting for..

Send the copies of your passport with the application, after 40-45 day call the consulate again and ask for the status, once they say it is ready then you send the original passports, thats what i did.

Thanks for the info. in this case I am planning on applying for a new passport (since my current passport is about to expire) and also get a PCC on the new passport and hence had the above questions. The answers from you seem to be answering on how to get a PCC on an existing passport that we currently hold. Please let me know ur answers if you are aware of ,based on my questions above.
 
I don't think you need a PCC for renewing the passports. Renewing means its kind of applying as a new passport. If you go to the consulate in person, i think you get it on the same day. Call the consulate and ask them

Do they have any renewal fee ???? i guess no!!!

You need to apply for New Passport, life of a passport is only 10 years. You will need to submit your old passport while applying. Your old and new passports will be returned to you. In future whenever you travel you will need to carry both passports.
