new green card after 14 years old?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi all,

My son just turned into 14 years old a month ago. He got his green card almost one year ago. Does he really need to get a new green card with his finger print on it. We need to spend $180 more if he has to. We plan to go back to the home country during the new year holiday. What is the risk for my son if he doesn't renew his green card (with his finger print on it) when he comes back to US?

Thanks a lot!

John

Not sure of any negative effect, but I did replace my daughter's GC after she turned 14. The biometrics fee is required but the process is really fast, like the new card is received in less than a month.

I didn't change my green card till it expired when I was 21 years old. I traveled in and out of the country at least two times a year between 14 and 21. Only the immigration officers at JFK (used it 3-4 times) said something about it. When I went to renew my card, they didn't say anything about it being "old". I had applied for it online but did not pay the biometrics fee, so they asked for another $50.00 at the office. It took almost 9 months for the new card.

Is it mandatory to replace the GC after turning 14 years, even if they got it finger printed on their current GC a year ago?

Thanks,
Sreeeni
