Hi,

I like to know if we can request for new social security number after obtaining citizenship or the current social security records will be updated with citizenship status. I appreciate any inputs and suggestions.

Same SSN will be updated with ur new status

...

SSN will always stay the same. You will have to pay a visit to the local SS Office with your Citizenship Certificate or U.S Passport and have them update you records from Perm Resident to U.S Citizen. Should be a quick visit.

agree...the same we do/did one when the status changed from non-resident to US LPR (Green card)... You will not need a new card, however, but the profile need to be updated via SSA system.

If your current SS card has the employment restriction on it (because you didn't already get an updated one without the restriction when you were a permanent resident), you should request a new card without the restriction when you visit the SS office to update your status. The new card will have the same number.

Name Change and Social Security Number

Thanks for your input. I think SSN will not change even if I change my name legally. Am I Correct?

That is correct. A name change will not result in a different SSN#. Please refer:

New SSN# may be assigned in harassment, abuse, or life endangerment situations apart from the situation I mentioned earlier. Effective November 4, 1998, the Social Security Administration (SSA) changed its existing policy of assigning new Social Security numbers (SSN) to victims of harassment, abuse, or life endangerment, including victims of domestic violence, to make it easier to obtain new SSNs. The change in policy was designed to make it easier for these individuals to elude their abusers and reduce the risk of further violence.
