New bill on US diversity law

Dear all,
Can anybody updates about the new bill of the diversity. The bill is going to be passed by senate, if so then, is DV-2008 going to be ended?

I have been closely following this in the media, and as far as I can tell in its current form the bill states that no one can obtain a GC through diversity status from the first of October 2008. So if the bill is passed by the senate in its current form that will mean the DV-08 will proceed. (Pending passing by the house of R and the president of course.) But there will be no more DV lotteries from then on.

The bill is still highly controversial and causing no end of debate in the senate at this very moment!. They are currently working through about 20 ish amendments and if they are all agreed on the bill may make it to a final vote, passed and moved onto the house.
If it is not passed this week I am getting the “impression” that it will be put on the back burner due to election year and all that and this issue may not make it back to the senate floor till 2009! But that is just from reading various news reports etc and not based on any real fact.

Its funny, about two months ago (before getting NL for DV08), I did not even know what a bill or an amendment was! Now I find my self delving into US politics every day!
Funny how your interests and priorities can so quickly change.. :)
