i am in MN, and they showed it finished the series here last wednesday. It is an irony that a nation of immigrants will be so "unfriendly" and have such inhuman policies for immigrants. Plights of today's immigrants is prime example of the horribly insensitive and insane immigration policies. I know no country likes to be known as soft target for immigration, but immigration laws and policies are so close to being ridiculous.
It is very ironic, but a lot has changed since the days of early immigration into this country. The policies and PR has made today's immigrants targets of bad publicity, because they deflect from the real issues and real reasons US jobs are going away and that is that companies need to keep competitive in the market and the only way to do that, especially these days, is to cut cost. I read an interesting article that said, essentially, instead of whining, why not start thinking about improving processes and making changes so that the cost of any business operation here equates or is smaller than the one overseas. Using the same methodology to do something, the cost of labor becomes the variable and deciding factor.
Anyhow, amongst the jobs "taken" by immigrants, legal or illegal, are:
- low skilled jobs, agriculture work, that US people do not want to do
- high skilled jobs, IT industry and so forth, and there are not enough people here to do those jobs, as the training and expertise are not attainable through a simple community college course or two (not to belittle anyone)
-call center jobs, where they do have an argument, but frankly, before the downturn, how many people were willing to do that?
The public opinion of immigration needs to change and then any administration, regardless of party, will take notice. We cannot do this, as we simply do not have the right of vote. Simple as that. Only voters as public can do this and that is why people need to stay involved (like the amazing Rajiv Khanna) with these issues after they have received their green cards and citizenships. If history in this country teaches us anything, it is that dedication to resolving an issue and an injustice pay off eventually. (sorry for the elaborate tangent)...
