Not sure if anyone has posted about this and it is OT, but has anyone seen this show? It is really a compelling piece of programming and it certainly puts a face on the immigrant plight. I watched it the other night and was really surprised how good it was. Something like immigrant reality TV...

I saw the documentary on Tuesday and Wednesday nights. It was a very good one indeed. You're right; it was a reality TV show of new immigrants (and those who didn't make it and had to go back home).

Yeah, next week they are announcing that the Indian computer programmer dude will be profiled, amongst others from before (the Mexican family seemed to be the most compelling and touching case). In the preview, he is seen walking through streets, somewhere in the Silicon Valley with his briefcase, and looking pretty perplexed :) No offence to the good people of India on these forums... I am expecting the administration and CIS to see this and immediately dedicate 100% of the resources to EB backlog resolution :p

end of series was touching

I watched entire series. It was really good but I think most power part was last ten minutes, when they wrap up the stories of each immigrant family. Very sad for Indian guy though, He was repeatedly laid off , last one being in 3 months at job in WI. He wwent back to be with his ailing father, and His father expired within 2 weeks. That was very sad. now he is india and has no intention to coming back to usa. I dont think anyone is surprised......

Ooo .. I take it you haven't seen the ending of the show; what happened to the Indian programmer, the Mexican family. It's interesting :)

Thanks a lot
Now I don't have to watch anymore :p
Frantic, the show was at like, 8 or 9 pm on CBS, I think that PBS stations are somewhat localized, so not sure when yours would be or if they are replaying it, this is for Miami, FL area... Seriously, I think it takes stuff like this to move some mountains and sending this to some people that can help would be beneficial... The opinion of the american public somewhat drives what the administration has to do and all the news shows here make it a point to put a human face on different tragedies and plights in order to have the viewed relate to it... It is a proof of how the PR controls the public opinion and changes attitudes of the common folk... All of the wars these days are lead in a PR office somewhere...

i am in MN, and they showed it finished the series here last wednesday. It is an irony that a nation of immigrants will be so "unfriendly" and have such inhuman policies for immigrants. Plights of today's immigrants is prime example of the horribly insensitive and insane immigration policies. I know no country likes to be known as soft target for immigration, but immigration laws and policies are so close to being ridiculous.

It is very ironic, but a lot has changed since the days of early immigration into this country. The policies and PR has made today's immigrants targets of bad publicity, because they deflect from the real issues and real reasons US jobs are going away and that is that companies need to keep competitive in the market and the only way to do that, especially these days, is to cut cost. I read an interesting article that said, essentially, instead of whining, why not start thinking about improving processes and making changes so that the cost of any business operation here equates or is smaller than the one overseas. Using the same methodology to do something, the cost of labor becomes the variable and deciding factor.

Anyhow, amongst the jobs "taken" by immigrants, legal or illegal, are:
- low skilled jobs, agriculture work, that US people do not want to do
- high skilled jobs, IT industry and so forth, and there are not enough people here to do those jobs, as the training and expertise are not attainable through a simple community college course or two (not to belittle anyone)
-call center jobs, where they do have an argument, but frankly, before the downturn, how many people were willing to do that?

The public opinion of immigration needs to change and then any administration, regardless of party, will take notice. We cannot do this, as we simply do not have the right of vote. Simple as that. Only voters as public can do this and that is why people need to stay involved (like the amazing Rajiv Khanna) with these issues after they have received their green cards and citizenships. If history in this country teaches us anything, it is that dedication to resolving an issue and an injustice pay off eventually. (sorry for the elaborate tangent)...

Update on Anjan (that is the guy's name):

After a number of temporary jobs and layoffs, Anjan landed a position in Madison, Wisconsin. After a few months, he was again laid off. In April of 2003, Anjan returned home to attend to his father who had fallen ill. Just weeks after his return, his father passed away. After tending to family matters, Anjan spent some time in India before returning to the United States. Presently, Harshini and daughter Amita are living in India while Anjan is in the U.S. on a temporary assignment. He is uncertain how long he will stay.

PBS

The PBS series was/is a good one. It will be broadcasted again as it is usually done with PBS programming. This one started 4-5 years ago and does not reflect the current realities. However, it shows that PBS is an avenue we can pursue.

There was another episode on MSNBC, ultimate Expolers with Lisa Ming and an interview with Mexican President Fox. Good show also about the "illegals". I remember the President's answer to the question of how the Mexican illegals should be viewed by the Americans: His answer was "DIGNITY". how real for all.

There is another show on NY channel 13 about recent immigrants...

Maybe, and all came through Canada when Jessy was the Governor!
On a more serious note, MN plays an important role in federal courts where a lot of cases are filed and also has "liberal", pro-immigration elected officials..
