My 485 was approved last week and I haven't got I551 stamping yet. However, I have a question and wanted to post it here. Pardon me if this question has been asked and answered several times before.
I am planning to make a trip to India by the end of Jan via Frankfurt. I am considering both Air India and Lufthansa, however, most likely I may end up with Air India. My question is - With I-551 stamping on the passport, do I need Transit Visa if I travel thru Frankfurt by Air India flight?
I went thru old threads but couldn't get the clear answer. I checked the German consulate website, it looks like I need visa. The travel agent also is not very knowledgeable about this. However, If anyone has an experience with situation like the above, please let me know.
Also, if anyone has applied and taken German visa, please let me know how long did it take (to send and receive documents with German visa on the passport by mail).
I would appreciate any useful information.
Thank you.

mmm.. Two different answers. Thank you anyway.

Transit visa.. to india

I think you need the Transit visa.
Why dont you use other carrier like Malaysian, kuwait etc. My friend visited India on malaysian airlines and they were okay with just the stamping.

Good luck

I will be travelling with NWA next month and Netherland recognises the Indian Passport. It means that no matter what your US visa status is, you will NOT need transit visa in Netherland ( for changing the planes only ).

This information I got from Netherland embassy itself.

In my case, I have I-551 stamp. I got to know that most of the European countries require transit visa except Netherland.

Hope it helps.

Thank you and zsuj and mugdha2100.
I have received responses from all 3 german consulates advising me to take the Transit visa. So I would take their advice. The chicago consulate have also sent me the FAQ doc - which we can see on their website. However, I have attached it if anyone wants to read it.

AirIndia via Frantfurt has the best rate - the price is still much lower even after the visa fees for Germany!. I am a family man and have to take their offer. :)

Fly KLM/NW via Amsterdam they don't need a transit visa as the other Idiots in Europe. I travelled in Nov using my AP via Amsterdam.

my personal experience

i came back from India via Frankfurt on MOnday 12/27/04.
the lady asked me if i had a valid visa or a green card. i told her i had an advance parole. she looked at it and that was it. I did not have a transit visa and it caused no issues.
From my understanding if you have a valid US visa you do not need a transit visa, but the officers do not know the entire procedure of when it is required themselves. so even though i was on Parole it did not matter, she considered that as a visa. :D

Pardon me if I have asked the same/similar question. What about the transit visa requirements for I551 stamp holders while travelling across pacific? Is the transit visa needed for airlines like Singapore, Malasiya, Quantas etc? Anybody with recent experience?

I guess no need of visa if u take Kuwait or Emirates flights. Emirates is on e of the best airline.

Hi keemus69,

Did you apply Transit Visa for Germany by mail OR drop the application in person ?

I got I-551 stamp on my passport (Still waiting for the card) and planning India trip via FrankFurt, Germany.

Thanks,

Yes, you need a transit visa

I am flying to India on Jan 9th, in Lufthansa via Frankfurt. German consulate won't consider I-551 stamping, and you should have a transit visa, thats what I heard from German Consulate Visa officer..

I live in Detroit, and I sent my passport via USPS mail and I got it back in 4 days. Let me know if you need anyother details.

dev_s73,
I sent the form + passport to Chicago office just yesterday. Just keeping my fingers crossed.
