Need to temporarily leave US

Hello

I am on F1 Visa. I have already completed 2 quarters of study here in the US. Due to my father's illness I have to go back to my home country. I am not sure how long I will have to be there. It could be 3 months or 6 months or some other time. I heard that I will can leave for only 5 months or less. But what if I need to stay longer? Will I be able to re-enter the US and continue studying?

I have a 5 year multiple entry F1 visa that expires in 2011. Furthermore, my passport expires in 2012.

You may need a new F1 or I20 if you stay out more than 5 months
