need to know from your AC21 experience..

hi all,
I have been a regular reader at this wonderful portal. I have been waiting for 485 approval for 20 months as of today. Recently I have come across a good career offer. Whether I can take the offer or not depends on my level of ease with AC21. My questions are:
1. The new job may take me from working for a Software company to the IT deptt. of a very big University. The nature of job is still software related and I would be working as a developer, but that does not mean the job description would match at all levels of scrutiny. For example, I may be working on a different platform, language, packages etc.. How important are these details in the job responsibility, or is it sufficient that the job is in the software field? When INS says the "job should be similar" what is the level of scrutiny that one needs to be careful about. I am asking from your experience since I am aware that the rule is pretty vague about it.
2. I read in one of the threads here that it is not necessary to file for AC21. What condition(s) would make filing of AC21 necessary or not?

Would greatly appreciate your perspective on this and anything else about AC21 that I should take into consideration. Since I have survived 20 agonizing months of waiting for 485, do not want to take an uninformed decision that may rock my boat :)

thanks a lot/
Suman

Filing of AC21 upfront is optional. If there is an RFE you are obligated to do that.
As regards job description etc- as long as you are doing a similar job it is OK. BCIS looks at 'similar' job liberally.
Good Luck,
