Need some advice urgently!

Terribly sorry if this is not the right place to post this question... I'd appreciate some guidance as to where else I can get a quick answer, if possible.

Situation:
I need to go back to NYC to get the interim stamp for the GC (I think it's I-551) on my passport. I am on a contract in CA right now, so I can only take a couple of days off. Does anyone know:

1. How long of a wait it normally is, outside the Federal Plaza, to get the stamping done?

2. Like some immigration offices, does this place have a "cut-off" time, after which no more passports are accepted for the day? The notice does not mention something specific like this, but one never knows...

Thanks a lot, DSatish, for directing me to the posting! My experience was a bit different, but not too problematic at all. Strange how that primitive looking stamp makes all the difference...
